HP Printer Firmware Updates – What They Are and What They Do

November 11, 2020

HP printer firmware is software that allows our printers to print. Like a smartphone with an operating system, HP printers contain firmware written by HP software developers that make the devices operate. Without firmware, most electronic devices we use daily wouldn’t be able to work.

To deliver the best possible printing experience, printing security features extend beyond HP’s hardware to include the cartridge for an end-to-end secure system that protects your network and information. HP firmware leverages the security of the original cartridge chip and is designed to protect against continually evolving security risks. In addition to helping protect against security threats, firmware updates delivered over the internet can improve, enhance or extend the printer’s functionality and features. Some printers have Dynamic Security and are intended to work only with new or reused cartridges that have new or reused HP chips or electronic circuitry. Periodic firmware updates will maintain the security, functionality and features of the printer.

Unless you are enrolled in HP’s Instant Ink program or use other services that require automatic online firmware updates, you may configure your printer to choose between receiving online firmware updates automatically or controlling them manually.  For more information on HP printer firmware updates and configuration please visit  HP Tech Takes.
