Driving the Circular Economy Through Device Refurbishment

By Dave Shull, President, HP Workforce Solutions

October 5, 2023

HP co-founder Dave Packard once said:

“The betterment of our society is not a job to be left to a few. It is a responsibility to be shared by all."

This has been the mindset at HP since its inception. Though HP is known around the world as a technology company, we’re so much more than that. At HP, we want to do our part to make the world a better place and help tackle global challenges. Through our innovation, we’re aiming to address the climate crisis, protect human rights, and promote digital equity.

We have set ourselves ambitious sustainable impact goals to hold ourselves accountable – like our goal to reach 75% circularity for products and packaging by 2030.1

So today, we’re excited to share another critical step on our journey towards our milestones.

Introducing HP’s New Device Refurbishment Offering

HP already offers a wide range of services to help accelerate our customers’ sustainability goals through more responsible computing practices. Today, we’re taking our portfolio one step further by introducing a new offering to extend the life of devices – HP’s first-ever PC refurbishment program – which is the first tool in a suite of services we are calling Renew Solutions.

This is something we’ve been doing internally at HP for a couple of years, redeploying close to 20,000 devices per year for our own workforce. Extending this offering to customers represents a transformational shift in how HP does business, reflecting our desire to address a growing market segment and reduce the environmental footprint of HP and our customers.

Every HP-certified refurbished device undergoes a rigorous refurbishment process ranging from memory enhancements to storage expansions, tailored to individual preferences and requirements. The devices are then tested extensively and inspected to ensure optimal performance and reliability. After receiving the devices, customers can enjoy peace of mind knowing that they are supported by the HP global support network. And since refurbished devices have been shown to have a lower carbon footprint compared to new devices,2 this program can also help our customers advance their sustainability goals.

The program kicks off with notebooks and we will build a global capability to scale and expand over time to include printers, collaboration equipment, and other hybrid solutions.

The current offering will be available in France this year, expanding to other regions in 2024. In India, we currently offer a rental model with 6- or 12-month options.

We also provide our customers with recycling and disposal, secure and certified device recovery services, and carbon offset programs.
